Any international couple is entitled to legally marry in Bali providing that they are of the same religious denomination. The Indonesian Government recognises five religious groups including Islam, Christian Protestant, Catholic, Buddhism and Hinduism. Each prospective marriage should be registered with the district Civil Registrar and the ceremony must be performed under any of the abovementioned religious rites.

Before conducting a wedding in Bali, every foreign couple is required to submit a ‘CNI’ (Certificate of Non Impediment to Marriage). This document is an official letter issued by their respective Consulate or Embassy representative in Indonesia stating that there is no objection for a legally binding marriage to take place Indonesia.

In order to obtain the CNI document, the couple has to visit their Consulate or Embassy to pledge an oath that they are both free to marry. Once the oath is taken, the Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (CNI) will be issued. This document can be process immediately by the Consulate office. However, certain Embassy or Consulate offices can process this type of they allow an application of CNI by sending all detail required by Embassy or Consulate office documentation without a directly having to meet with a Consulate representative.

A marriage certificate in Indonesia will be issued once the following documents have been compiled and sighted:

  • Copies of both passports
  • Copies of birth certificates for both the bride and groom
  • Details of religious faith (i.e. baptism certificates)
  • Written parental consent for any person under the age of 21 years
  • Copy of death certificate for former spouse/s (if relevant)
  • Decree absolute divorce certificate (if relevant)
  • Two (2) witnesses are required for your wedding
  • Eight (8) photographs (6 x 4 cm) of the couple in same photo. Photo must be of the head & shoulders only, side by side, looking straight ahead. These photos will be attached to your wedding certificate
  • Completed wedding application form
  • Copy of letter signed by the priest stating that have performed a religious ceremony according to their respective belief
  • Other papers pertaining to Indonesia marriage laws

Important:

  • The couple must give notice of their intention to marry to the registrar in the district where the marriage is going to be conducted by filling out the civil form from the Civil Ministry. This notice must be filed at least 10 working days prior to the wedding date.

At least three weeks before the wedding date, Catholic couples should submit the following items of documentation:

  • Baptism Certificates - mandatory. These should be issued not more than 6 months (and preferably not more than 3 months) prior to your wedding date.
  • A "Letter of Freedom" issued by your Parish Priest or other Church Official, declaring that you both have never been married and therefore are free to marry.
  • A "Letter of Delegation" issued by your Parish Priest or other Church Official, declaring that they have no objection to your marriage ceremony being performed by a Priest from the Catholic Church in Bali.
  • Have attended a pre-nuptial course and made pre-marriage inquiries.
